Tala is a large suburban village located approximately 6 kilometers north of Paphos, Cyprus. It has become a popular destination for non-Cypriots, many of whom have chosen to settle there permanently or maintain summer residences in the area.
Just 1 kilometer north of Tala lies the historic Agios Neophytos Monastery, founded in 1159 by the hermit Neophytos. Initially imprisoned for his pursuit of an ascetic lifestyle, Neophytos eventually escaped into the hills of Cyprus, where he discovered a small natural cave. Over time, he expanded this cave into what became known as the Engleistra—a secluded hermitage consisting of his personal cell, a small chapel, and eventually his tomb.
Neophytos was a fervent critic of materialism and sought solitude, which contributed to the monastery's relatively small monastic community compared to others of the era. Upon his death, he was buried within the Engleistra, following his meticulously written instructions.
Neophytos' successor, Isaias, is briefly mentioned in his writings. However, little is known about Isaias’ tenure as abbot, and historical records remain silent regarding any abbots during the 13th to 15th centuries.
