Peyia is a town in Cyprus with a population approximately 10,000 residents. Peyia is situated mainly on the steep slopes of the coastal hills inland from Coral Bay, at the southern end of the Akamas Peninsula, and it lies 14 km north of Paphos. It has a large population of British ex-pats and a growing number of holiday homes and apartments. In the town center can be found a town hall, church, police station and several small shops, restaurants, and banks. Due to its hillside location, many parts of the town offer fantastic views over Coral Bay and Paphos.
Peyia covers a large area stretching from the Peyia Forest on the hills high above the village in the north, to the sea in the south, and from the Bay of Maa (known as Coral Bay) in the east to the Akamas Peninsula in the west. However, the name is used more frequently in respect to the town.
Peyia, like many other towns in the Paphos region, sports a large number of cafes and restaurants along the main road of Coral Bay. More places to eat are being built on the next road in, to the east of the main strip, suggesting there is no shortage of demand. These range from taverns, meze houses, and traditional cafes, to themed restaurants hosting, for example, Chinese nights. The next significant town is Kathikas, which again has an impressive range of eateries, as well as the Sterna Winery.
Winding up through the banana plantations after a short drive along the coast road from Paphos brings you to Peyia, located on the hillside overlooking Coral Bay. A beautiful ancient church forms the heart of the village while the narrow streets and alleyways are full of old and interesting houses adorned with colourful flowers and citrus trees. The old village center is still largely unspoiled with lively tavernas and friendly locals. You can buy all your provisions including fresh meat and bread in the village stores with the early morning aroma of freshly baked bread, sweet and savory local pastries and cakes coming from the Peyia bakery being almost too much to resist!
The village of Peyia is one of the most picturesque and popular villages in the area. Peyia is spread over a large area with the village centre having many good amenities including Bars (with Wi-Fi) (‘The Mill’, ‘The Jail’, ‘The Grande’ and 'Vrisi'), Restaurants (home to ‘The Peyia Tavern’, ‘Cousins’, 'Savvas Grill', and many more), Takeaways, Shops (Philippos supermarket, Papantoniou Bakery, pharmacy, fishmonger, deli) and a bank (to name but a few). There is also a fitness center (Tower Fitness) between Peyia and Coral Bay if you want to work off the fabulous food (you won't be able to resist).
Only a 5 minute drive away is the famous Coral Bay resort with its Sandy beach for all the family as well as its more extensive selection of nightlife and daytime activities. Other things to do in the area include Paphos Bird Park, reptile park, horse riding, Akamas Peninsula & Lara Beach Nature Reserve (famous for turtles), hiking/walking, buggy safaris, 4 x 4 safaris, sea caves area, watersports, sailing, wineries and much much more.
